Delivery Frequently Asked Questions
How are my building materials brought in?
All of the steel members for your building or home are brought in on a flat rack (usually a 40’ long one, shorter depending on the building) and the rest are brought by pallets. All materials are coordinated for delivery from the manufacturer to the consolidator in the States. Once everything has arrived, it is shipped on the same truck all at the same time.
How do I know all of my parts are there?
As a part of your delivery paperwork, we include a BOM (bill of materials) for you. Verify length, type of material, color and quantity. Any missing or damaged items must be noted and pictures must be taken of all damaged items. Those missing or damaged parts will be ordered immediately.
What if I had missing or damaged parts on my delivery day?Replacement parts are ordered immediately at Northern Steel Buildings expense. Insurance claims to the shipper or supplier are settled without the customer’s involvement.
When can you deliver our products?
Quotes are delivered usually within 4 business days, provided the approximate dimensions, purpose and jobsite location is provided.
Engineering plans are delivered stamped in Canada, and all fifty
Dry building materials are delivered to your jobsite in Canada around 2 to 4 weeks later.
Who schedules delivery of my building? The drayage company may contact you directly for delivery scheduling. ** Please notify Northern Steel Buildings if the drayage company calls and you schedule delivery. In the event we are contacted, we will talk with you first before scheduling delivery date and time.
What can I expect the day my building materials arrive? The drayage trucks and flat rack carriage will need to be delivered an unloaded as soon as possible. There is usually a two day grace period, but storage fees and other fees will be charged due to any delays. Delays in unloading and keeping of the Young Brother’s chassis will result in as much as $150 penalty PER DAY. These charges are your responsibility should delays ensue.
To avoid such charges:
1) Schedule drayage delivery as soon as conveniently possible once the building materials arrive to your home dock.
2) Please notify Northern Steel Buildings of your delivery date.
3) Please be present during the entire timeframe of delivery and unloading. Once the inventory is complete, any damage, missing parts and inventory, your signature is required.
4) Make sure you have room enough on your jobsite or arrange a transfer site, for the drayage trucks (40’ or 20’ depending on your building pieces) to deliver. Additionally, the drayage trucks requires a forklift to unload all materials. There must be sufficient flat room on your jobsite to not only part the chassis, but also to maneuver the forklift to the intended storage on the jobsite.
5) IF YOU HAVE INSUFFICIENT ROOM FOR STORAGE AND UNLOADING AREA OR AN ACCESS ROAD CANNOT BE MANUEVERED:
1. Notify Northern Steel Buildings BEFORE the building is manufactured. The steel members can sometimes be packed differently, allowing more maneuverability for delivery trucks.
2. Notify the drayage company of the need for an additional truck and/or alternate delivery site for transfer to the jobsite.
6) Plan on having one area of dry storage (if possible) for items such as insulation, foam roofing inserts and boxes of fasteners. IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, please have a tarp or plastic covering for these items.
7) Depending on your building size, expect transfer and/or unloading to take several hours. If your jobsite is unimproved, make sure you have ample shade, chairs, water and/or other weather protective items while you are observing unloading.
